Patient Ownership is a simple concept but a critical requirement for any EHR system. The Patient owns the known and available records and accepts full responsibility for their storage, handling, access and personal entries. Patient Ownership does not extend to unknown or unavailable records nor records that the Patient has no control over.

The Patient is responsible for information that is integrated into records even though the Patient does not own or is not responsible for them.
